MLK Day of Service 2012
Dear Friends,
I am writing to remind you of the Stop Hunger Now event that is occurring as part of the Martin Luther King Day of Service in Melrose. I have attached the flyer from the city of Melrose. It is FUMC’s largest mission project of the year!
What:
A food packaging event that will create 50,000 meals.
The assembly process combines rice, soy, dehydrated vegetables and a flavoring mix including 21 essential vitamins and minerals into small meal packages. These meal packages are shipped around the world to support school feeding programs and crisis relief. The food stores easily, transports quickly and has a shelf-life of five years.
Where:
First United Methodist Church, 645 Main Street, Melrose
Go thru the front doors and down the long hall to Parish Hall.
When:
9:30am – Noon (NOTE: our most recent bulletin indicated to come at 11:30am – this is a typo! See you at 9:30am!)
(The kick-off rally is starting at 9:00am at the Melrose Middle School or feel free to come right to the church)
Who:
200 volunteers - we need you!
Bring your family, friends, co-workers and neighbors. This is a great service project for the whole family!
There will be jobs for folks of all ages and abilities. - Jobs for everyone! Ages 4 to 100
How can you help?
We are looking forward to your participation! You can sign-up by following this link!
We are raising .25 for each meal we package. Just imagine that 30 dollars would feed a student for the whole month. If you would consider skipping your morning coffee for 30 days, just imagine what impact those funds would offer toward our project. This is a big undertaking and we trust that your generosity will help us meet this goal. We will be accepting checks made payable to Stop Hunger Now or cash donations may be dropped off at First United Methodist Church or given to Diana Heise.
Stop Hunger Now is working toward bringing a packaging warehouse to the Boston area. If we are lucky enough to raise additional funds they will go towards the development of the warehouse. Andrew Sullivan, Program Manager, from Stop Hunger Now and Keith Newins, Chair of the Advisory Board for the Boston warehouse project will both be participating in our packaging event at First United Methodist Church.
In a few weeks, our Church will be informed of where our packaged meals have gone in the world!

![]() January Food Pantry Item!
In order to make it easier for our church family to participate in donating food pantry items to church, FUMC has gone to an item-of-the-month format for food pantry donations. Each month our FUMC Families will be asked to donate a specific type of item, I know this well help all of us with the "what do I donate" dilemma. Please donate an item a week or a few times a month. The basket for donations is in the main hallway. With so many more needy families than ever, every jar or package helps the Food Pantry continue God's work of feeding the hungary.
The food pantry item-of-the-month that we are collecting for January is... Peanut Butter! Please bring jars of Peanut Butter (any kind...creamy, chunky, honey nut, old fashioned) to worship throughout the month of January for donation to the food pantry !
